Types of Torque Sensors
Torques sensors are
transducers which alter torsional mechanical inputs into electrical output
signals. There are two different types of torque sensors that are used to
measure different types of force. Angular or Rotary force is measured using
Dynamic Torque Sensors whereas force through a distance is measured using
Static Torque Sensors.
Dynamic Torques Sensors
Now, dynamic torque
sensors are also of two types - rotary torques sensors and non-contacting
torque sensors. Rotary Torque Sensors are commonly required in applications on
rotating shafts. On the other hand, non-contacting torque sensors are used
where magnetic or inductive technology is needed to provide accurate
measurements at high rotational speeds. They also offer long maintenance-free
operation as they do not use wearing parts such as slip rings.
Here’s
a list of applications which may use a Dynamic Torque sensor:
·
Test set-ups for precision mechanics
·
Biomechanical movements in medical
engineering
·
Engine test benches
·
Measuring drag torque of motors and
pumps
·
Screwing technology
Static Torque Sensors
Static torque sensors
are well equipped and used for industrial applications and fatigue testing.
They offer long term reliability because they have non-moving parts. Static
Torque sensors are required in applications where angular motion is restricted
and in-line torque measurements are required.
Here’s a list of applications
which may use Static Torque Sensors:
·
Acquisition of breakage moments on the screw
caps
·
Determination of friction torques
·
Measuring friction torque of bearings
·
Test structures in precision mechanics
·
Measuring the torque used for vehicle
control elements.
